Summit Overview

You're invited to join us for a dynamic 3-day gathering thoughtfully constructed to bring together a variety of post-secondary community members to respond to the question:

How do we* design post-secondary education and vibrant campuses that are conducive to – and foster – mental health and wellbeing, healthier relationships with substances, meaningful engagement and transformational learning?

*We being all campus community members: students, instructors, administrators, presidents, student services professionals, researchers, parents, community-based organizations and governments.

Participants will contribute their valuable knowledge and experience from diverse perspectives and vantage points to advance the implementation of a systemic approach to campus mental health and substance use.
A systemic approach “is comprehensive, and views the whole campus as the domain to be addressed and as responsible for enhancing and maintaining the mental health of community members; extends the focus beyond the individual and strategies such as treatment, skill building and awareness to the whole campus including its environment, organizational structure, policies and practices…”

Student Testimonial from the 4th Annual Summit
Revolutionizing Campus Wellness: A Vision for Healthy Campus Communities

“After having attended the Healthy Minds/Healthy Campuses Summit, I was left greatly in awe of the excellent work that is being put in behind the scenes and the incredible people working on behalf of students in general- especially those with mental health setbacks.

I was so happy to have brought back, along with Karli, a little piece of that to share with our peers. We were inspired to set in motion a dialogue about thriving creatively as a student, particularly in a school where the arts are such a main focus. As a music student that has struggled with anxiety and depression in the past, and having had this affect my ability to thrive, attending the conference led me to realize that this is something that does not have to be an individual struggle; rather, as teachers and students we can co-operatively work to support one another and not let anyone slip through the cracks.

I very much support the idea of more students attending this conference. Not only was it inspiring, but I saw tangible evidence that what Karli and I shared with our peers mattered to them. If we can continue to have students inspiring one another, change will happen.”

Thank you,
Desiree Hall, Selkirk College

(Desiree Hall and Karli Harrison attended Summit 2012 and then designed and ran the Selkirk Creativity Forum for 100 students. In addition, Desiree spoke to University Arts and Science Faculty about how instructors can help support students with Mental Health issues and help create healthy environments for learning.)
